Here we will ‘box’ highlight and underline certain key paragraphs, phrases, and words throughout the ESV Hebrews Journal booklet (hereafter ESV-J). It would be helpful to dedicate a specific color, e.g. blue, for Part 1, and a distinct color, e.g. red, for Part 2 below.
The table below identifies such recommended highlighted texts by conventional chapters and verse numbers, and by page number in ESV-J (all understood to be with regard to Hebrews).
Citation | Hebrews (ESV) |
1:1-4 (p. 8) | 1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. |
1:8 (p. 8) | 8 But of the Son he says,“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom. and the heavens are the work of your hands; |
1:10 (p. 8) | 10 And, “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands; |
1:13 (p. 8) | 13 And to which of the angels has he ever said, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”? |
2:9b -10 (p. 12) | 9…Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. |
2:14b-15 (p. 12) | 14…that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. |
2:17 (p. 12) | 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. |
3:1-6 (p. 14) | 1 Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. 3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. 4 (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) 5 Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, 6 but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope. |
5:5-6 (p. 20) | 5 So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was “You are my Son, appointed by him who said to him, today I have begotten you”; 6 as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.” |
5:10 (p. 20) | 10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. |
